Christopher Columbus (1451-1506): The New World!
In the middle of the 14th century the Ottoman Empire (
) blocked all land trade routes between Europe and Asia with high taxes and ambushes on trade caravans. When trading of exotic plants, silk and spices has all but completely stopped, the idea to find a western seaway between Europe and Asia was born.
- August 3rd 1492: Under the command of Christopher Columbus the Santa Maria set sail from the port of Palos de la Frontera together with two other ships.
- September 14th 1492: Columbus crosses the equator for the first time.
- October 12th 1492: The fleet reaches San Salvador close to the American coast.
- May 11th 1502: Columbus starts another voyage to find the western passage to India.
- August 14th 1502: With his flagship Capitana Christopher Columbus reaches the bay of Honduras. At the same time the first European sets foot on the American continent!
The New World was finally discovered and Christopher Columbus's name went down in history.
